The Strategy

Contending with Change
The Woodland Strategy will have a 20-year life span. The present Action Plan will be thoroughly reviewed to accommodate changing circumstances every five years.

A dynamic region and its strategic implications.

The East of England is increasingly subject to change. Consequently, while in 2003 the six themes could be treated equally, we now need to consider in what respects the Regional Woodland Strategy might best be adjusted to accommodate a number of alterations to the regional context. The key factors are the continued growth in housing, pressures on water resources and a changing climate.

The implications of climate change were core to the original plan and, thanks to the work to date, awareness of the issue is now higher here in the East of England than anywhere else in the country. However, as time has passed, the impact potential has become better understood and the level of political awareness increased. The effects of climate change are far-reaching, impacting directly and indirectly on all the Strategy’s themes.

The upshot of all of these effects could be a requirement to introduce a degree of prioritisation amongst the actions that was absent from the original Strategy. It is anticipated that the implications of this and other changes to the region’s core context will be fully reflected in the next version of the Regional Woodland Strategy, development of which is likely to commence in 2008/2009.
