There are some140,000 hectares of woodland in the East of England, or 7.3% of the total land area. In addition, there are approximately 13.5 million trees outside woodland in the countryside, 14,000 kilometres of hedgerows containing a high proportion of trees and an immense but un-quantified urban tree stock. All told, trees and woodlands form a vital part of the character of the East of England, both rural and urban.
